Good News Gram: Local Business, Willie Ray’s Q Shack Feeds People for Free in Response to Derecho
“I just said ‘hey, I have some food’ and started handing it out.”
Willie Fairley owns Willie Ray’s Q Shack. Since the derecho hit in Iowa, he has pivoted his service by giving out free meals to those impacted by the storm…over 400 free meals on just one day alone!
“I just got my food truck and was ready to start selling, but once the storm hit I thought there might be something better to do with the food,” said Fairley.
Fairley was hurt seeing how the derecho affected his fellow residents and decided to do something about it.
“It’s devastating you know, A city you’ve been in for 18 years and you see it just crumble down.” “They were outside working all day long,” he said. “I just said ‘hey, I have some food’ and started handing it out.”
“People who lost their homes, they don’t have food and he doesn’t ask for anything in return,” added Cedar Rapids resident Lexi Massey.
Fairley says his goal is to help feel a homeless shelter at least once a week when the aftermath of the derecho is over.
